Blue's Journey

UPDATE! Blue has finally started gaining weight - and holding it. We have completed several tests, tried many different supplements and feeds, and ultimately none provided any answers to why Blue would not gain appropriately. He is now energetic and showing us just how much life he has left to live. He is almost ready to test his riding skills.

Blue was the recipient of the Saving Baby Equine Grant that helped with testing! The Founder has co-authored a book, Saving Baby: How One Woman's Love for a Racehorse Let to Her Redemption, where proceeds go to the Charity so they can continue to aid equines in need. Stop by and get your copy today!

Adoptions!

Avery and Moses were adopted in May and are doing well. Avery is going to teach some boys how to ride and Moses is going to learn how to be a ranch hand. We're excited for them all!

Long County Guest

On 8 May we were called by Long County Animal Control to pick up a horse that was at large. He had escaped his pasture and was on Hwy 196, as well as knocking on residential doors! Although he had some minor abrasions and was terrified he loaded beautifully and we brought him home to locate his owner. Unfortunately he is still in residence.

Immediate Need!

Our tractor is disabled and looks like it's permanent unless we are able to locate a mechanic who is familiar with Eicher tractors. We have raised partial funds to purchase a new tractor, over $13k, however the purchase price is $19k.

We would love to be able to repair (if possible) the current tractor so that the funds raised can go towards other projects. Do you know a good, honest tractor mechanic?

Ongoing Needs

Are you able to support our herd either financially or on the ground?

We are always looking for volunteers to help in every area. Sign up for a Volunteer Orientation today!

  • Horse care, grooming, exercise – various experience levels welcome
  • Grounds maintenance – no experience required
  • Fundraising – experience preferred - motivated individuals welcome!!!
  • Grant writing – experience preferred

Every one of our 20 horses and burros is looking for love and sponsors! Winslow has a sponsor (THANK YOU MARY) but is still looking for love. Although the monthly cost is approximately $250 (no emergencies) per head a contribution of as little as $5 each month goes a long way. We completely understand that life frequently gets in the way of what we wish we could do to help others. A lot of people sending a little each month allows us to continue lifesaving efforts.

The ADA Bathroom project is nearing completion! The structure is finished but we still have electrical and the wheelchair ramp/stairs to go. The remaining estimate to complete all areas is $1,200. Only donations specifically slated for our building fund goes here - everything else goes directly in or on our herd.

Thank you to everyone who has already sent donations. We could not continue saving lives without support like yours.

There are several ways to donate:

Annual Fund - Donations through our Annual Fund can be directed to hay, building, general, or to sponsor a specific horse.

Branded Items - We have a supplier for some clothing items with our logo. Options currently include sweatshirts, t-shirts, tanks, coffee cups, baby items, and bumper stickers. $2.50 from every item purchased is returned to Second Chances.

PayPal - We also have a PayPal account to send donations. This is sometimes easier because you do not have to sign up for an account to use this service. Please consider using the Friends and Family option so that we are not charged any additional fees.

Mail or Visit- Second Chances LOVES to see visitors and to receive mail! Checks, money orders, and cash can be directed to:

Do you know who shot me on 30 Jan? I had to be euthanized because of that wound on 13 Feb. I wasn't ready to die yet. Contact Detective Dustin Rushing of the Liberty County Sherriff's Dept at 912-876-4555 referencing case number 17020690 or the Game Warden at 478-494-5756.
Second Chances is still actively seeking a sponsor for security cameras so we never have to meet this tragedy again.
